Boxing | Conlan wins WBO Inter-Continental Featherweight Title

Michael Conlan has won the WBO Inter-Continental Featherweight Title.

The Belfast boxer beat Jason Cunningham comfortably on points in his first title fight to take his professional record to 10-0 at the Manchester Arena.

Conlan - who made his ringwalk to Shakin' Stevens' 'Merry Christmas Everyone' - started the fight well and got the better of Cunningham in the opening two rounds.

The former Olympian was warned after two low punches in the third, and his English opponent began to land some shots.

Conlan was eventually docked a point for another low shots in the sixth, but the 27-year-old continued to maintain the upper hand in the fight.

He unleashed a heavy barrage of punches late in the eighth, and also dominated the ninth.

Doncaster native Cunningham - seeking a knockout - made a strong start to the tenth and final round, but then did well to survive the round after a furious onslaught from Conlan.

The three judges scored the bout 97-92 / 97-92 / 98-92 in Conlan's favour.

Conlan was fighting on the undercard of Carl Frampton's world title fight with Josh Warrington in Manchester.
