Boxing | Eddie Hearn reacts to tragic passing of Patrick Day

Patrick Day lost his fight for life on Wednesday, following the weekend defeat to Charles Conwell in Chicago.

The 27-year-old was knocked out in the 10th round, and underwent emergency brain surgery on the same night. Day was removed by stretcher after being treated in the ring.

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn had taken to twitter on Wednesday to express his shock and offer support to those affected by Day's tragic passing.

In an interview today with IFL TV, Hearn expanded on the hurt he felt on the boxers passing, at one stage becoming emotionally overwhelmed by the gravity of the situation.

Saying it is hard to justify, Hearn also spoke of the importance of the sport coming together and focusing on what can be done to make it safer.

“It has been a rough year for the sport. We need to make sure we get together as a community, we keep trying to evolve, we keep trying to make the sport safer.

“There are so many things we can look at as a community, particularly scans.

“One of the issues is the frequency of scans in my opinion. You can have a yearly scan but sometimes it doesn't take into account the fights you have had since that scan."
