Boxing | Joe Ward avenges nightmare debut with win over Marco Delgado

Joe Ward has produced a shutout six-round victory over Marco Delgado in Puerto Rico to avenge his nightmare professional defeat to the Californian in 2019.

All three judges awarded Irish boxer Ward a 60-54 victory over Delgado (7-1) at the Albergue Olimpico arena in Salinas, and the victory extends the Moate man's professional record to 3-1.

In their previous meeting at Madison Square Garden in October 2019, three-time European amateur championWard suffered a freak knee dislocation just four minutes into the fight as his transition from world-class amateur to promising pro began in the worst possible manner.

However, the 27-year-old former Olympian has followed up two quickfire comeback wins in Mexico last year with another impressive victory.

It took time for Ward - clad in green, white and gold shorts - to shake off the ring rust, but he began to find his rhythm in the fifth and sixth rounds against his 29-year-old American opponent.

Both fighters traded back and forth in the fourth, with Delgado landing one heavy hook on Ward, but the Irish fighter produced some eye-catching shots of his own.
