Brighton are close to completing a deal for Derby County defender Eiran Cashin.

The Rams had rejected Brighton's initial bid for the Republic of Ireland U21 international earlier in the transfer window, but a fee has now been agreed for the centre half.

Cashin, 23, has made 22 appearances for Derby this season, scoring one goal.

Derby manager Paul Warne had been optimistic about keeping Cashin at the Championship club, who are sitting 22nd in the second tier, in the midst of a relegation battle.

"It's at board level," Warne said of the transfer, speaking at a press conference previewing his side’s Championship clash with Sheffield United on Saturday.

"That's out of my paygrade. Cash is training with us - until I get told anything different I don't know. As I speak to you (on Thursday morning) I expect him to be available (for Saturday) although I am mature enough to realise in football things can change all the time.

"As I've been told today, when preparing the team, Cash will be a part of it. That is all I know."

Brighton travel to the City Ground to take on high-flying Nottingham Forest in the Premier League's early kick-off on Saturday afternoon.

The Seagulls are currently ninth in the top flight, collecting 34 points from their opening 23 matches.

Ireland forward Evan Ferguson has been linked with a move away from the AMEX Stadium before Monday night's deadline. The 20-year-old has fallen out of favour under new manager Fabian Hurzeler, who hasn't ruled out an exit for the Meathman.

"I want to keep working with him," Hurzeler said.

"But like I’ve always said, it’s important to discuss with him what is important for the individual development of the player because that’s the main thing from the club. We want to improve the development of the players, we want to help them and therefore we need an exchange.

"Then we’ll see what makes sense for the player over the next six months, what makes sense for the club and then we will make a decision together. It won’t be an individual decision, always a togetherness.

"I’ve felt in the conversations I’ve had with Evan that he only wants to play, that’s his main thing, no matter if it’s here or for another club."

Ferguson has been linked with a number of clubs including Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, Arsenal and Everton in recent weeks.
