It has been a day to forget for one of the tournament favourites Shane Lowry, who after 16th holes was six-under-par. The possibility of missing the cut is a stark reality he must now face.

The best of the Irish so far on day one is James Sugrue who is two-under after 17 holes and Padraig Harrington who is also two-under but teed off later than Sugrue and is currently on the 6th.

Damien McGrane is one-under after 14 holes.
