Champions League | Favourable draw for English teams

The Champions League group stage draw was made this afternoon.

European champions Liverpool have drawn Napoli, Red Bull Salzburg and Genk in Group E.

The Reds beat Napoli 1-0 at Anfield in their final group game last year to advance to the knockout stages at the expense of the Serie A club.

Salzburg are the Austrian champions, while Genk won the Belgian league last season.

Liverpool will kick off their European campaign with a trip to Naples (where they lost last season) on September 17th.

Spurs have been drawn in Group B alongside Bayern Munich, Olympiakos and Red Star Belgrade.

German giants Bayern were eliminated by Liverpool in last season’s last 16, while Red Star beat the Reds in Serbia.

Spurs will be hoping to go one step further than last season, where they lost the final to Liverpool in Madrid.

First up for Mauricio Pochettino’s men is a trip to Greece to take on Olympiacos on the 18th of September.

Manchester City have been paired with Shaktar Donetsk for the third consecutive year. The duo are joined by Dinamo Zagreb and Atalanta in Group C.

City will renew their rivalry in Ukraine against Shaktar in their opening group match on September 18th.

Chelsea will compete with Ajax, Valencia and Lille in Group H.

Ajax were minutes away from reaching last year’s final before Spurs’ stunning comeback sent them crashing out.

Chelsea will host Spanish side Valencia in their first game on September 17th.

Heavyweights Real Madrid and PSG have been drawn together in Group A, with Club Brugge and Galatasaray completing the group.

Group D consists of Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen and Lokomotiv Moscow.

Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Slavia Prague will battle it out in Group F.

Finally, Group G contains Zenit St Petersburg, Benfica, Lyon and RB Leipzig.

There was more good news for Liverpool club at the draw, with Virgil Van Dijk named UEFA Men's Player of the Year, beating Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the award.

Goalkeeper Alisson was named as the Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season. Frenkie de Jong won the best midfielder award for his performances with Ajax, while Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi was named best forward.
