Football | 10-man Dundalk prevail in Andorra

Dundalk are through to the next round of Europa League qualifiers after beating Inter d’Escaldes 1-0 in Andorra.

David McMillan produced a good finish in the 14th minute to give the Lilywhites the lead, before Andy Boyle was sent off in the 58th minute after receiving a second yellow card at the Estadi Comunal.

The reigning SSE Airtricity League champions will now face Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova next Thursday.

Dundalk, who have now won all three matches under Filippo Giovagnoli, made a bright start in Andorra.

McMillan headed a Sean Hoare cross wide in the 10th minute, before firing the visitors into the lead four minutes later.

Stefan Colovic recovered possession and found Michael Duffy, who slipped an excellent through ball behind the Inter defence to McMillan, who finished clinically.

Duffy, Sean Murray and Greg Sloggett then passed up opportunities to double Dundalk's lead, before McMillan saw another effort go wide.

Late in the first half, Chris Shields produced a great block to deny the hosts an underserved equalizer.

Murray almost made it 2-0 before the break, but his free kick cannoned back off the post.

Dundalk were dealt a huge blow two minutes before the hour mark when Boyle received his second yellow, with both cards being contentious.

Brian Gartland saw his header tipped over the crossbar, before Betriu Armengal and Soldevila Solduga squandered late chances for the hosts.

Elsewhere, Shamrock Rovers suffered a 2-0 defeat to AC Milan at Tallaght Stadium.
