Football | Arsenal sack Unai Emery

Arsenal have sacked manager Unai Emery.

Emery, who succeeded from Arsene Wenger in 2018, has been relieved of his duties after the Gunners' 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday.

After 18 months at the club, the Spaniard has paid the price for Arsenal's worst ever start to a Premier League season.

"The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required," a club statement revealed.

"We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward. "The search for a new head coach is underway and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete."

The Gunners are without a win in their last seven games - their worst run of form since George Graham was manager in 1992 - and are eight points off the top four after picking up just four wins in their opening 13 Premier League matches.

Emery departs leaving the club in eighth position on 18 points. When the North London club take to the pitch to face Norwich on Sunday, it will have been 56 days since their last league win.

Arsenal finished fifth in the league and reached the Europa League final in Emery's first season at the Emirates.

Issues with captaincy have been a major issue in recent months, with Laurent Koscielny departing the club in acrimonious circumstances and Granit Xhaka's well-documented public argument with the Arsenal supporters.

Ironically, Emery's team won the exact same amount of points (88) in his 51 games in the dugout as Arsenal did in Wenger's final 51 games at the club.

A host of managerial names have been linked with the club in recent weeks, including Mikel Arteta, Nuno Espirito Santo, Patrick Vieira, Rafael Benitez, Eddie Howe, Massimiliano Allegri, Brendan Rodgers and even Mauricio Pochettino.

Wolves manager Nuno is the early favourite for the job.
