Football | Denmark take Swiss scalp in Group D

Denmark have joined Ireland at the top of Group D on 12 points, after a 1-0 win over Switzerland in Copenhagen.

The two sides were evenly enough matched throughout, and despite chances for both sides to score, the game looked to be heading for a draw, before Yussuf Poulsen struck past Yann Sommer, having being set up by Christian Eriksen.

This puts real pressure on Ireland in their remaining games, with both the Swiss and the Danes having an easier run in. However, qualification is still in their own hands.

Switzerland and Ireland play on Tuesday night, with the Swizz having a game in hand. Their final two games are against Georgia at home and Gibraltar away, both in November.

Denmark also have a game against Gibraltar - at home - and their final game is against Mick McCarthy's Ireland team on Dublin on November 18th.

The pressure is on Ireland somewhat, but this result leaves Denmark in a strong position, particularly with what must be seen as a guaranteed three points at home to a Gibraltar team who have failed to muster a goal in their five group games to date.
