Football | Drogheda stun Derry in FAI Cup final

Drogheda United have beaten Derry City 2-0 in the Sports Direct FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium.

Andrew Quinn and Douglas James-Taylor grabbed the goals for the Drogs, securing European football for the Louth club as well as their first trophy in 17 years.

Kick-off was delayed for five minutes due to the number of flares let off inside the Aviva, the crowd of 38,723 creating an electric atmosphere in Dublin.

Drogheda took the lead when Quinn ghosted in at the back post to sweep home Shane Farrell's free kick in the 37th minute to give Kevin Doherty's underdogs the lead in the capital.

Things went from bad to worse for Ruaidhrí Higgins' out-of-form Derry soon afterwards when they lost captain Patrick McEleney to injury.

James-Taylor doubled Drogheda's lead from the penalty spot in the second half after Derry's Ronan Boyce tripped Conor Kane inside the area.

The Candystripes pushed for a way back into the game, but the Drogs held firm to lift the FAi Cup for the second time in the club's history.

Drogheda defender Elicha Ahui was named man of the match for an excellent performance which helped Doherty's men to keep Michael Duffy shackled.

Drogheda will now turn their attention to their promotion/relegation decider against Bray Wanderers next week.

It is another heavy blow for Derry, who finished the season in fourth place, missing out on European football for next season.
