Football | Former Ireland Under-21 player joins Hibs from St Mirren

Despite being close to a Premiership switch from St Mirren to Dundee United, it is Hibernian who have secured the signing of the former Aston Villa midfielder, Jake Doyle-Hayes. The 22-year-old - a former Ireland Under-21 international - joins the ranks under John Ross, himself a former St Mirren player and manager.

Doyle-Hayes, a focused and adroit central midfielder from Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan, made 30 appearances for St Mirren last season, scoring just once, in a 1-0 victory over Livingston. Doyle-Hayes has proven himself a balanced player, working hard to protect his defence but also capable of a varied passing game.

Hibernian will be looking to bridge the gap with Celtic and Rangers, having finished third last season, but still a considerable distance behind the Old Firm sides, and will see the signing of the Irishman as a part of an overall plan to loosen the Glaswegian grip on league dominance.

Speaking on the clubs official website, spoke of his feelings on the move.

"After speaking to the manager, I was delighted to get this opportunity.

"I saw the club last season and played against them and the players they have should be competing for 'medals' all the time. The expectation of the club is to be challenging for them and I think that's really good."
