Football | Hourihane scores free kick on Swansea league debut

Conor Hourihane scored a free kick to rescue a point for 10-man Swansea City on his Championship debut for the club.

The Republic of Ireland international curled home a 78th-minute set piece for Swansea to secure a 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Liberty Stadium.

Brentford had taken an early lead in Wales through Tariqe Fosu-Henry's fifth-minute header, and things got worse for Steve Cooper's hosts when Kyle Naughton was shown a second yellow in the 69th minute.

12 minutes from time, Aston Villa loanee Hourihane swung a dangerous delivery into the Bees' box.

The free kick evaded everyone, including Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, nestling in the far net and drawing Swansea level against the run of play.

"[The goal] was a great delivery from Conor - an area that we talked about in the gameplan," Swansea boss Cooper said afterwards.

"The goalkeeper's starting positions we felt were an area we could hit, and Conor's put it where we planned to, and it's brilliant to get ourselves back in the game."

The stalemate sees Swansea climb up to second in the Championship, ahead of Watford on goal difference.

Cooper's men have collected 47 points from 25 games, and sit six points behind league leaders Norwich.

Brentford, who are unbeaten in 17 matches, are fourth on 45 points after 24 matches.
