Football | Ireland to face Slovakia in Euro 2020 play-off

The Republic of Ireland will face Slovakia away in their Euro 2020 semi-final play-off.

Wales' 2-0 win over Hungary in Cardiff has secured Ryan Giggs' team's place at next year's tournament, and confirms Ireland's trip to Slovakia on March 26th.

Mick McCarthy's team narrowly missed out on automatic qualification after Monday's 1-1 draw with Denmark in Dublin.

Ireland's stalemate with the Danes left the Boys in Green with the prospect of an away trip to either Wales, Slovakia or Bosnia.

The winners of Ireland's semi-final clash with Slovakia will face the winner of the other League B semi-final, where Bosnia will host Northern Ireland.

Ireland's last two meetings with Slovakia - which occurred during qualification for Euro 2012 - both ended in a draw.

Slovakia are currently ranked one place below Ireland in the FIFA world rankings.

The exact details of the play-offs will be confirmed at a draw in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday
