Football | Long joins Bournemouth on loan

Southampton striker Shane Long has joined Bournemouth on loan for the rest of the season.

The Championship club snapped up the 34-year-old forward on Deadline Day to bolster their fight for promotion back to the Premier League.

Republic of Ireland international Long has made just 11 league appearances for the Saints this season, failing to register a goal or assist for Ralph Hasenhüttl's side.

“I am delighted to bring an attacker of Shane’s experience and quality to the club,” said Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall.

“As well as his undoubted technical ability, Shane’s character, maturity and leadership skills are something we have been searching for to add to what is a relatively young squad.

“He has played at the highest level for the majority of his career – including the past nine seasons – and we are hoping to bring the best out of him over the coming months as we aim to gain promotion back to the Premier League.”

It was a busy Deadline Day for the Cherries, with attacker Josh King joining Everton on a permanent deal, while Jack Simpson also moved north to join Scottish league leaders Rangers.

Bournemouth are currently sixth in the Championship, and will face Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham this week.
