Football | Ronaldo heads United to victory over Atalanta

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late winner as Manchester United produced a stunning second-half comeback from two goals down to see off the challenge of Atalanta to go top of Group F.

Mario Pasalic sent the visitors into a shock lead after Zappacosta sent a low cross into the six-yard box. Pasalic managed to get himself ahead of Harry Maguire for a simple tap in past David de Gea.

Merih Demiral extended the lead with a powerful header into the top left-hand corner of the net. The Turkish international was quick to escape the lurking presence of Maguire before steering his header past De Gea.

The retuning Marcus Rashford pulled one back with a crisp finish after the half-time interval.

The Hosts got themselves back on level terms when Maguire was quick to react to Edinson Cavani's flick into the middle. The captain fired it into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

The comeback was complete as for the second Champions League game in a row Ronaldo produced another bit of magic by further increasing his goal-scoring record. The Portuguese international was on the end of Luke Shaws cross managing to get in front of Palomino before thumping his header past Musso to take the pressure off manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Full Match details

This very close tight-knit group is set to go down to the wire and with three games left to play, any one of the four teams can still qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Manchester United came into this game needing a win as the pressure is beginning to mount on Solskjær. Last weekend's result in the league against Leicester didn’t help the cause any good as #Oleout was trending on Twitter.

United made three changes for the Wednesday night game with Scot McTominay and Fred coming into midfield for Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, while there was a start for the retuning Marcus Rashford.

The night didn’t start well for the hosts as Pasalic sent the visitors in a surprise lead. The Serie A side were quick to catch United out with a quick free-kick allowing Muriel to play in Zappacosta, who sent in a dangerous, low cross into the six-yard box for Pasalic who got ahead of Maguire to tap it past De Gea. VAR had a quick look for a potential offside in the build-up.

Fred went close to getting the hosts back on level terms but his effort was equally matched by a great save from the fingertips of Musso.

It went from bad to worse for the host as Demiral doubled the lead as United managed to fail to defend a corner kick. Dermiral got himself away from Maguire before planting his header past De Gea.

Fred and Rashford both missed glorious chances to pull one back before the interval, as scenes of booing could be heard around the stadium.
