Football | Spurs confirm the appointment of Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

The 56-year-old replaces Mauricio Pochettino, who was sacked on Tuesday, and has signed a four-year deal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Mourinho - who has won 25 trophies in a staggeringly successful managerial career - returns to the Premier League just under a year after being sacked by Manchester United, which came at a time when Pochettino was the favourite to replace him at Old Trafford.

The 'Special One' inherits a team who reached the Champions League final in June, but are currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, having collected a paltry 14 points from their opening 12 matches.

“I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters," Mourinho said.

"The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

Mourinho won three Premier League titles in two spells at Chelsea, and has also won league titles in Italy, Spain and his native Portugal, as well as the Champions League with both Porto and Inter Milan.

As well as the aforementioned Premier League titles, Mourinho has won one FA Cup (with Chelse), the Carabao Cup and the Europa League (both United) during his previous spells in England.

The Portuguese manager will be expected to end Spurs' 11-year trophy drought, something which Pochettino was unable to do.

“In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football," Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said.

"He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”
