Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Manchester United 1-0 in the 2025 Europa League final in Bilbao.

Brennan Johnson scored the winner in the 42nd minute to secure Spurs' first silverware since the League Cup in 2008 and earn the North London club a place in next season's Champions League.

Ange Postecoglou defiantly declared that he always wins trophies in his second season as a manager, and his words proved prophetic. In contrast, it's a miserable end to a wretched season for United, who miss out on European football next season.

Ruben Amorim's side had 72% possession and mustered five shots on target, but lacked the quality to break through Spurs' determined defence.

Spurs went into the game in 17th place in the Premier League, one place below their opponents, and in truth, it was a final of low quality. Johnson's winner was a scruffy goal, but the winger was in the right place to prod home from close range after Pape Sarr's dangerous cross rebounded off Luke Shaw at the near post. It was Johnson's 18th goal of the season, and Spurs' only shot on target, but it proved to be the difference in Bilbao.

Rasmus Højlund went closest to an equaliser for United, but Spurs centre half Micky van de Ven produced a stunning acrobatic clearance on the line to deny the Red Devils' striker. Bruno Fernandes, substitute Alejandro Garnacho, and Luke Shaw all had chances for United, but despite some nervy moments, Guglielmo Vicario made some smart saves to protect Spurs' lead.

Spurs and their supporters had to survive seven nervy minutes of additional time, but Ange's much-maligned men held their nerve to record a historic win in Spain. It was the North London club's fourth win over the Red Devils in all competitions this season.

"This season hasn't been good at all, but I swear not one of us players right now care about that. This is what it's all about, this club hasn't won a trophy for 17 years," Johnson told TNT Sports.

"Honestly, this is what it means. It means so much. All the fans get battered, we get battered, for not winning a trophy, for not winning anything. But we had to get the first one in a while today. I'm so happy."
