Athletics | Mageean breaks personal and national records in Bern

Ciara Mageean has won a gold medal in Switzerland, setting personal and Irish records in the process.

The Down athlete has become the first Irish woman to run the 800 metres in under two minutes, finishing with a time of 1:59.69 in Bern in what was her first race since February.

Mageean finished ahead of Norway’s Hedda Hynne(2:00.72) and France’s Renelle Lamote (2:01.50), who completed the top three.

Rose-Anne Galligan. (2:00.58) had set the previous Irish record at the 2013 London Anniversary Games.

"I am absolutely delighted. With the disappointment of everything this year, Olympics postponed and lockdown for months, my coach, my teammates and I put our heads down and worked hard," Mageean wrote on Twitter.

"Devastated I won't run for Ireland this year but I'll continue to work and build on this for 2021 and beyond."

The 28-year-old set a new national 1500m indoor record earlier this year, also set a new mile record last year at the Indoor Grand Prix Boston.
