Basketball | Lakers turn up the heat on Miami

Game one of the NBA finals, between the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat took place in Orlando, Florida, yesterday, and it was the Lakers who picked up where they left off in the Western Conference series final.

Having disposed of the Denver Nuggets 4-1, in the best of seven series, the Lakers had something of a slow start against the Eastern Conference winners, but ultimately proved too strong and go into game two on Saturday with something of a swagger.

The Heat have already over-achieved this season and their presence in Walt Disney World for the quarantined games, is not something the fifth seeded team in the Eastern Conference would have expected to come about. But they started the game in the manner of a team who weren't willing to rest on their laurels, and in the first quarter they took a 13-point lead. But 11 three-pointers saw the Lakers see out the first half in style, and really, there was no looking back after that.

The Heat weren't helped by injuries to Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic who both had to leave the court, with shoulder and foot injuries, respectively.

Le Bron James was in fine form, contributing 25 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. Jimmy Butler scored 23 points for The Heat, but a twinge in his left leg had an impact, despite being able to finish out the game.
