Cycling | Sam Bennett tastes success in Tour de France

Sam Bennett once again takes hold of the Green jersey in this year's Tour de France, winning the 10th stage of the tour, and joining a pantheon of Irish greats in doing so.

Protected well by his Deceuninck Quick-Step teammates, the Irishman sprinted to glory along the western France route, holding off Peter Sagan and Caleb Ewan.

Bennett has now equalled the feat of Shay Elliott in winning stages in all three Grand Tours and also joins Elliott, Dan Martin, Martin Earley, Stephen Roche and Seán Kelly as the only Irish riders to win stages on the Tour.

Speaking after what was a stunning display, Bennett said that it hadn't hit him yet.

"I thought I’d be in floods of tears but I’m in shock.

"I just want to thank everyone that has been involved, the whole team, Patrick for giving me this opportunity and just everybody it took to get to here. I want to thank my wife, everyone around me.

"You dream of it, you never think it’ll happen. It did and, I don’t know, it took for a while to hit me."
