Andy Moran has announced his retirement from inter-county football.
The 35-year-old confirmed the news during an appearance on The Second Captain's podcast.
"My career is finished as of yesterday really," the 2017 Footballer of the Year told Richie Sadlier.
"I had a conversation with James yesterday. I let him know that it was finished. I'm now re-focusing and my mind is clear.
"I left the whatsapp groups last night. Some great friends, some great memories. It sounds silly but that was the toughest moment of the lot."
Moran won eight Connacht titles and one Allianz League Division One title in his 16-year senior Mayo career.
The veteran forward racked up 182 appearances for the county, agonizingly losing six All-Ireland finals.
He made 85 Championship appearances in total for the Connacht county, and is currently Mayo's all-time record appearance holder.
Moran enjoyed the best year of his career in 2017 as Mayo lost to Dublin in the All-Ireland final by a point, picking up the Footballer of the Year award for his inspirational performances in that season's Championship.
His influence and experience remained crucial this year as Mayo bounced back from a Connacht semi-final defeat to Roscommon to reach the All-Ireland semi-final.
Moran was superb against Donegal in Mayo's decisive Super 8s clash, but was powerless to stop Dublin powering into another All-Ireland final when the familiar foes met in the last four.
However, he experienced his first taste of National League glory when Mayo beat Kerry in the Division One final in Croke Park this spring.
He is expected to continue his club career with Ballaghaderreen.
