Waterford captain Pauric Mahony has been ruled out of the 2020 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship due to a knee injury.

Mahony, who was promoted to captain by Déise manager Liam Cahill last year, damaged his knee in a challenge against Wexford last weekend.

The 28-year-old made his Waterford debut in 2011, and was the Championship's top scorer when Waterford reached the 2017 All-Ireland final under Derek McGrath.

"Pauric Mahony will miss the 2020 season due to a knee injury. Liam Cahill, his team and all in Waterford GAA would like to wish Pauric a speedy and full recovery," Waterford GAA confirmed on Twitter.

Mahony has also played a starring role for his club Ballygunner, who have won seven successive Munster titles.

Waterford face Cork in the Munster semi-final on Saturday week.
