A bronze medal on the pommel horse, saw Rhys McClenaghan win a bronze medal at the Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany today.
The 20-year-old scored 15.400, which was only 0.1 short of the gold medal winner, Max Whitlock. The silver medal went to Chih-Kai Lee, who scored a 15.433.
He is the first ever Irish Gymnast to secure a medal of any description at the World Championships. Having qualified for the final in this discipline, he had already guaranteed himself a place at next summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo.
This success is a further endorsement of his talent, having won medals at both the Commonwealth and European games in 2018.
Ciaran Gallagher, the CEO of Gymnastic Ireland said in the aftermath of McClenaghan's success that the performance was "An unreal result and again history made by Rhys McClenaghan who cemented his position as a global gymnastics star and Irish sports star with his superb world bronze on Pommel Horse.
" Faultless preparation led by our National Coach Luke Carson and Performance Manager Sally Johnson, support by our Physio Julianne Ryan made this result possible in what was a real team effort to secure this podium finish."
